If you’ve customized FreeCAD on one installation and want to transfer those settings to a fresh installation, you can easily import your existing FreeCAD configuration. FreeCAD stores its configuration files in a specific directory depending on your operating system. You need to locate these files on your existing installation. You can find the configuration Files with respect to operating system as follows.
- Windows:
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\FreeCAD\
- Linux:
/home/<YourUsername>/.FreeCAD/
- macOS:
/Users/<YourUsername>/Library/Preferences/FreeCAD/
When we save a file in FreeCAD, all settings are written to the user.cfg and system.cfg files located in the folder C:\Users\Your username\AppData\Roaming\FreeCAD. As I am using Windows operating system you can see my system and user configuration file shown in below image.
If you copy these files to the aforementioned folder of a fresh FreeCAD installation, you will convert it to the FreeCAD you are used to. You can Also Backup the Configuration Files to do thatCopy the entire FreeCAD
folder (or the specific files/folders mentioned above) to a safe location (e.g., a USB drive, cloud storage, or external hard drive).
Install FreeCAD on the new system if you haven’t already. Launch FreeCAD once to generate the default configuration files and folders. Navigate to the configuration directory on the new installation and replace existing FreeCAD folder of your previous FreeCAD with New folder.
