Open-Source CAD Software for Linux Operating System

01

CAD is most important aspect of all type of engineering design with CAD it is impossible to imagine any engineering design. Linux is one of the most popular operating system after Windows. Most popular CAD software like SolidWorks, Autodesk inventor are Linux supported. In this article we will discuss about CAD software which are available for Linux operating system.

FreeCAD:

02

It is one of the most popular open-source CAD software available in the market. Best part of FreeCAD is it is getting improved with its release. I am big fan of this software and I teach FreeCAD on You Tube. FreeCAD is available for all major operating system Windows, Linux and Mac. FreeCAD is built with mechanical engineering and product design as its target purposes. FreeCAD is one of the best alternative of software like SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor. FreeCAD is best solution for small scale industries those cannot afford costly software like SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor.

LibreCAD:

03

As FreeCAD is alternative of SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor same way LibreCAD is alternative of AutoCAD and available for Linux operating system. It is one of the best free and open-source 2D CAD solution. As compared to AutoCAD LibreCAD is light weight and it is one of the best tool for geometric constructions. As LibreCAD is 2D CAD tool so cannot be used for rendering of 3D model. It has in build AutoSave feature which prevent work loos.

OpenSCAD:

04

It is not a traditional 3D modeling software. It creates the model based on code and it is very light weight and flexible available for Linux operating system. Creating 3D model in OpenSCAD is it difficult but if you are familiar with programming then you will love it. OpenSCAD interpret the input code to and render a visual 3D model.

BRL-CAD:

06

It is one of the oldest CAD program started in year 1979 and it is still under development. BRL-CAD is one of the best tool for study of defense equipment such as thermal and ballistic penetration. BRL-CAD is powerful because it used constructive solid geometry method to create the model. BRL-CAD is available for Linus and can be downloaded from the official website.

QCAD:

07

It 2D CAD software which is available for Linux operating system. It is based on Qt framework. QCAD comes with two version community version is free and have some restriction whereas professional version comes with some advance feature like advance DXF support and advance DWG support with many extra tools and features.
